The best study spots in Graz: Where you’ll really be productive in 2026

Graz is a university town through and through. With the Karl-Franzens-University, TU Graz, the Medical University and the University of the Arts, well over 50,000 students shape the cityscape. Accordingly, the choice of study spots is large – from majestic university libraries to specialty coffee cafés in Geidorf to modern coworking spaces in the city center.

But choice doesn’t mean clarity. Which library really has the best atmosphere? Where can you sit with your laptop for hours – and where are you explicitly unwelcome? When is a coworking day pass worth it? In this guide you’ll get the best study spots in Graz systematically – with real addresses, opening hours and strengths and weaknesses based on current reviews. Every place is linked to Google Maps so you can start right away.

1. Libraries: When you really need silence

Graz boasts one of Austria’s most beautiful study locations with the University Library. But the other city and university libraries are often overlooked gems. The advantage: almost all are free, often have long opening hours and a good study culture.

University Library Karl-Franzens-University

Address: Universitätsplatz 3a, 8010 Graz (Geidorf)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 8am–10pm, Sat 9am–10pm, Sun closed
Website: ub.uni-graz.at
Strengths: Probably one of Austria’s most beautiful study locations. Two libraries in one building: downstairs the traditional “Silent Library” with a breathtaking atmosphere, upstairs a highly modern floor with excellent facilities. Very long opening hours – even Saturdays until 10pm. The historic reading room is an absolute must.
Weaknesses: Overcrowded during exam periods; ideally be there before 10am.

TU Graz University Library

Address: Technikerstraße 4, 8010 Graz (Inffeldgründe)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 8:30am–9pm, Sat–Sun closed
Website: ub.tugraz.at
Strengths: Lots of power outlets, large tables, relaxed atmosphere. A nice extra bonus: a “creative table” for study breaks with crafting materials, puzzles, origami. According to many locals, “the best place in Graz to concentrate”.
Weaknesses: The 3rd floor can get noisy – if you need absolute silence, go to the 1st or 2nd floor.

Wall Library Center (Uni Graz)

Address: Merangasse 70, 8010 Graz (Geidorf)
Opening hours: Mon–Sat 8am–6pm, Sun closed
Website: ub.uni-graz.at
Strengths: Less known than the main library, but often quieter and less crowded. Open on Saturdays – not a given in Graz. Ideal if you live or study in Geidorf.
Perfect for: Focused weekend sessions.

Graz City Library – Main Library Zanklhof

Address: Maria-Stromberger-Gasse 2, 8020 Graz (Lend)
Opening hours: Alternating Mon/Tue/Thu 8–14 and Wed/Fri 11–18
Website: stadtbibliothek.graz.at
Strengths: Centrally located, easy to reach with the new tram lines 16 and 17. Friendly staff, well organized. Perfect for shorter study sessions or if you don’t have a university affiliation.
Weaknesses: Unusual alternating opening hours – always check in advance! The sweet spot is between 11 and 14, when it’s open on weekdays. Can also be louder than a typical library.

Stadtbibliothek Graz – Zweigstelle West

Address: Eggenberger Allee 13a, 8020 Graz (Eggenberg)
Opening hours: Alternating Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri 8–14 and Wed 11–19
Website: stadtbibliothek.graz.at
Strengths: Compact but well equipped with desktop computers and a copier. Friendly neighborhood.
What you should know: Described in reviews as “the loudest library in Graz” – great for group tutoring, less suitable for focused solo studying.

2. Cafés for studying: Make the most of Graz’s coffeehouse culture

Graz has a lively café scene, shaped by the Austrian coffeehouse tradition and a strong specialty coffee movement. But beware: not every café likes laptops. One café even has an explicit laptop ban (BLEND COFFEE Roasters) – good to know before you sit down. The following places are laptop-friendly or at least tolerant.

LIBRESSO – Coffeehouse in the main university building

Address: Universitätsplatz 3, 8010 Graz (Geidorf)
Opening hours: Mon–Thu 7:45–18, Fri 7:45–15, Sat–Sun closed
Strengths: The café right in the main university building – a short walk between the reading room and a coffee break. Very friendly operator, high-quality coffee, small daily specials. Practically unbeatable for university students.
What you should know: Coffee to go costs around €4.60 – not the cheapest, but the quality is right. Closed on weekends.

Café Fotter – Geidorf

Address: Attemsgasse 6, 8010 Graz (Geidorf)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 8–15, Sat–Sun 8–14
Strengths: Almost cult status in Graz. Cozy, elegant, with one of the city’s nicest beer gardens. Perfect combination of breakfast café and quiet workspace. Open on weekends – rare in this category.
Weaknesses: A bit outside the center, often full at lunchtime. For longer sessions come in the morning before 10 or in the afternoon after 13.

Ducks Coffee Shop

Address: Raubergasse 14, 8010 Graz (Innere Stadt)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 7:30–18:00, Sat–Sun 9:00–18:00
Highlights: Almost 1,000 reviews with 4.6 stars speak for themselves. Very friendly service, fair prices, quiet side street with a terrace, soft seating with space for backpacks – much more laptop-friendly than many classic Viennese coffee-house types.
Bonus: The homemade cinnamon rolls are legendary.

Beanery Specialty Coffee

Address: Zinzendorfgasse 20, 8010 Graz (Geidorf)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 7:30–18:00, Sat 8:00–18:00, Sun 9:00–18:00
Highlights: An absolute must for coffee nerds and students in Geidorf. Excellent specialty coffee, a wide selection of non-caffeinated drinks, very friendly baristas, indoor and outdoor seating. Ideal for shorter, intensive study sessions.
What you need to know: Small venue, can fill up quickly at peak times.

Black Coffee

Address: Schörgelgasse 15, 8010 Graz (Jakomini)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 7:00–13:00, Sat–Sun 8:00–13:00
Highlights: Very generous interior, beautiful courtyard with a beer garden, family-friendly. Ideal for morning study sessions with brunch. Vegan-friendly.
Drawbacks: Closes already at 13:00 – only suitable for morning sessions. Wi‑Fi comes from the neighboring “Black Home” and can be slow according to reviews.

Important to know: BLEND COFFEE Roasters on Joanneumring has excellent coffee but explicitly forbids laptops in the venue. Good to know so you don’t sit down there in vain.

3. Coworking spaces: When you need a full workplace

For longer study projects, when you’re looking for a fixed place every day or want a productive work environment without library silence, coworking spaces are the best option. The Graz scene is manageable but high-quality. Day passes are usually between €15 and €25, often with coffee and tea included.

Coworking zu Geidorf

Address: Villefortgasse 11, 8010 Graz (Geidorf)
Opening hours: Mon–Fri 7:00–20:00, Sat–Sun 9:00–17:00
Highlights: The only coworking space in Graz that’s open 7 days a week – a real USP for weekend learners. 5.0 stars on all reviews. Small offices, open areas, meeting rooms, phone booth. Very friendly people, fair prices.
Perfect for: Freelancers, students in exam phases, anyone who needs consistent availability.

Commod Creative Space

Practice block: How to find your study spot in Graz in 5 steps

The best study spot is not the prettiest or the most central – it’s the one that fits your current task and learning style. Here’s how to find it:

  1. Ask yourself: Do I need silence or background noise? Absolute silence ➜ Karl-Franzens University Library (Silent Library downstairs). Light stimulation ➜ Café Fotter or Beanery. Focused work environment with others ➜ Coworking in Geidorf.
  2. How long do you want to stay? Under 2 hours: LIBRESSO or Ducks Coffee. 2–4 hours: TU Library or Café Fotter. Whole day: University Library or coworking day pass.
  3. Do you study alone or in a tandem? Alone ➜ Library (reading room). Two people with exchange ➜ Café Fotter, Ducks, or a coworking space with a conversation zone. Find a study partner.
  4. What do you need technically? Stable Wi‑Fi and lots of power outlets ➜ Coworking or TU Library. Just coffee and a quiet seat ➜ Café Fotter, LIBRESSO.
  5. Always have a plan B. During the exam periods in January/June the university libraries are often full from 9 a.m. onwards. Keep an alternative ready – for example Bibliothekszentrum Wall (less crowded) or a café outside peak hours.

4. Secret tips: studying in the park and in the sun

In the warm half of the year Graz with its Stadtpark is an ideal outdoor study paradise. The park is located directly between Innerer Stadt and Geidorf – perfectly accessible for students of the Karl-Franzens-University. Benches, lawns, shady clusters of trees and many benches invite you to study with a book, flashcards or a language app.

More tips for outdoor studying in Graz:

  • Schloßberg: If you don't mind a short hike up the hill, you'll find peace at the top and a dream view over Graz. Ideal for breaks between intense sessions.
  • Augarten: Further south, less crowded than the Stadtpark, with direct access to the Mur.
  • Volksgarten: Located in Lend, smaller, quieter, with nice cafés nearby.

Important: parks are unsuitable for structured studying (no Wi‑Fi, changing light), but perfect for audiobooks, flashcards, vocabulary, language apps or repeating together with a study partner.

5. Graz specifics: what you should know as a student

Student union access is worth it

As a student of the Karl-Franzens-University or TU Graz you automatically have access to all university libraries – often with extended options (interlibrary loan, database access, night reading rights). If you are not familiar with these options, check with the university library service.

Geidorf is the study neighborhood

A look at the map shows: most top study spots are concentrated in Geidorf – the classic student quarter around the university. If you study in Graz and want to study seriously, a Geidorf address is worth its weight in gold.

Exam periods are extreme

January/February and June are quiet mass events in Graz. If you want to be in the university library during these months, be there at 8:30 a.m. Alternatives like Bibliothekszentrum Wall or a coworking space then become more attractive.

6. Conclusion: the right place accounts for 30% of your learning success

The biggest productivity lever in studying is not the next tool or the next AI app – it is the environment you work in. Graz offers you the right spot for every need, from the majestic university library to the charming neighborhood café in Geidorf. Try two or three places that suit your study type and make them your rotation.

And one more tip: Studying alone is good, studying together is usually better. Studies show that people with a study partner stick with it more regularly and make faster progress.
